A blue and white "antiqities" teapot

A refined example of clear cobalt-blue decoration against a white porcelain body. The decoration of antiquities (so-called bogu motifs) refers to scholarship and reverence for the past. The gilt-bronze mounts and chain were added in Europe in the 18th century as a luxurious enhancement. The Jiajing mark (Ming dynasty) on the base is used here as an homage to earlier periods.
