The scene illustrates the love story of Xue Dingshan and Fan Lihua: Xue, a general of the Tang Dynasty (618–907), and Fan, daughter of a general from the enemy state Xiliang, meet on the battlefield and fall in love. Following misunderstandings, they marry and divorce twice, but ultimately live happily ever after. A similar plate is in the MET, object number 79.2.413.
